ABATE CORNER: (submitted by Debbie)

Strategy - Tighten the Requirements for a Motorcycle Operators Permit to Insure Riders Are Demonstrating Rider Skills on Shorter Time Frame.

The current "permit system" allows riders to get a permit by taking a 25 question written test, a vision test and a sign test at DMV. This permit allows a rider to ride with no other restriction than to not carry a passenger. This permit is good for 18 months and may be renewed at the end of 18 months.

In order to correct this situation we would like to propose that the permit system be revised to allow a one year non-renewable permit by taking the DMV written test if they have held a valid NC drivers license for two years or more. Individuals with less than two years valid drivers license will be required to successfully complete the NC Motorcycle Safety Education Program. Individuals less than 18 years of age would be required to take and successfully complete the NC Motorcycle Safety Education Program course. The young individuals are still learning to master the skills required to drive a passenger car on our streets and highways, and do not need the added complication of learning to ride a vehicle that requires another set of skills entirely in the presence of other vehicular traffic. This allows an individual a full year, which encompasses 8-10 months of riding weather and a full year option to enroll in a NCMSEP course. The successful implementation of this legislation will result in better skilled motorcyclists. Motorcyclist will be safer on each and every trip and law enforcement will be able to better enforce a very important traffic safety law.

Health Tip:. Cut Fat

Avoid the obvious such as fried foods, burgers and other fatty meats (i.e. pork, bacon, ham, salami, ribs and sausage). Dairy products such as cheese, cottage cheese, milk and cream should be eaten in low fat versions. Nuts and sandwich meats, mayonnaise, margarine, butter and sauces should be eaten in limited amounts. Most are available in lower fat versions such as substitute butter, fat free cheeses and mayonnaise. Thought for the day: Lean, mean, fat-burning machine.. Then be one!

A Note from Sue:

SOME OF MEMBERS ENDURED THE COLD AND RAIN SATURDAY (April 29) FOR RELAY FOR LIFE. THIS EVENT WAS PUT ON BY THE GHOST RIDERS OF WILSON. THE TURN OUT WASN'T GOOD AS COULD HAVE BEEN THE WEATHER DIDN'T HELP. BUT THERE WAS ONLY FEW BIKES ( MOSTLY OUR CHAPTER) THAT RODE IN THE RAIN AND THE COLD. WE DID IT FOR A GOOD CAUSE. THE BEST AND WORST HAND WAS WON BY OUR CHAPTER MEMBERS. CHRIS ELLIS WON BEST HAND AND GARY WOODRING WON WORST HAND. BOTH MEMBERS DONATED THE MONEY BACK TO RELAY FOR LIFE. WHAT WAS REALLY NICE EACH ONE OF THEM RECEIVED A PLAQUE FOR THE BEST AND WORST HAND. ONE OF THE GHOST RIDERS MEMBERS WON THE GUN THAT THEY HAD SOLD TICKETS ON. I KNOW WE ALL ENJOYED THE RIDE EVEN BEING WET AND COLD. THAT'S WHAT WE ALL SHOULD DO SUPPORT THE CAUSES AND THE OTHER MOTORCYCLES CLUBS AROUND. JUST REMEMBER THAT CAUSE MAY BE YOURS ONE DAY. I WANT TO THANK EVERYONE THAT RODE.

THANK YOU

SUSAN (PUDDIN)

Motorcycle Safety Tip: WEATHER HAZARDS

Bad weather poses a special threat to motorcyclists, so give them plenty of space, especially at night. The road becomes extremely slippery during the first several minutes of a rainstorm, and many riders pull off the road to wait this part out. Not only does rain, snow, and wind affect stability and traction, it can also interfere with a rider's concentration. Signal your intentions well in advance and pay close attention to traffic flow.

Riding in fog, rain, or snow is very risky and demands extreme caution. Vision is a rider's best source of information, and bad weather can make it useless. (If you can't see a hazard, you can't take steps to avoid it.) Wet roads only have half as much traction as dry roads. If travel in these conditions is necessary, reduce your speed and increase your following distance. Signal your intentions early, and brake and accelerate gradually. Remember that you will be almost invisible to other drivers.

Joke of the Day:

The Parking Ticket

I went to the store the other day. I was only in there for about five minutes, and when I came out there was a motorcycle cop writing a parking ticket. So I went up to him and said, 'Come on buddy, how about giving a guy a break?'

He ignored me and continued writing the ticket. So I called him a stupid idiot. He glared at me and started writing another ticket for having bald tires!

Then I really got angry at him. He finished the second ticket and put it on the car with the first. Then he started writing a third ticket!

This went on for about 20 minutes. The more I abused him, the more tickets he wrote. I didn't care. My car was parked around the corner!
