BRUCE ON BIKERS' RIGHTS (9-2008 Special Edition) www.ldrlongdistancerider.com

DON'T CALL YOURSELF A FREEDOM FIGHTER
Unless you actually get out and vote!
Fellow Riders and "Freedom Fighters":

The November elections are only a few weeks away. Soon we will finally get a merciful reprieve from the disappointing back-and-forth "lipstick politics" polluting our myopic media, and at long last we will know whether the mess We the People made by voting for Dubya *twice* will be inherited by "Oblabla and the Mouth" or "McSame and the Milf".

SPEAKING OF VOTING... If you have not yet registered to vote, please do so as soon as possible. If you have any questions about where or how to register or vote in any state, you'll find a wealth of information online at the U.S. Election Assistance Commission Voter Information Center www.eac.gov/voter

Remember that voting is not just a right: It's a responsibility. Your exercise of that right is necessary for the preservation of our freedom. If you don't exercise it, then don't ride around calling yourself a "freedom fighter".
And before you vote, I encourage you to get familiar with the real, substantive issues--not just what the cable TV talking heads are blathering about--and the political candidates' positions on those issues. Do not assume that all Democrats are liberals or anti-biker, or that all Republicans are conservatives or biker-friendly. It was, after all...

...A DEMOCRAT (U.S. Congressman Rob Andrews, NJ) who allied himself with ABATE of the Garden State [ http://tinyurl.com/62jmtj ] in this year's noble if unsuccessful attempt to unseat Frank Lautenberg, saying "I fully support the effort to preserve the rights of the motorcycle community by opposing unnecessary federal laws that seek to constrain the liberty of riders."; and it was

...A REPUBLICAN (State Representative Carlos Lopez-Cantera, FL) who solicited the aid of ABATE of Florida's president and paid lobbyist James "Doc" Reichenbach II in sponsoring HB-137 [ http://tinyurl.com/6qbs9h ], legislation authorizing the seizure of motorcycles, threatening us with "They'll lose their bike... Their motorcycle license will be revoked for 10 years, and it's a mandatory arrest so they will go to jail."

Bikers--and all other voters, for that matter--must stop assuming that any political "label" is by itself sufficient basis for a responsible decision! And I can only hope I need not say the same about gender or race...

ONE MORE THING... Do not accept the spin and smear spewing from any political camp as gospel. And for God's sake, be skeptical about anything you read in those ridiculous chain mails that are clogging the pipes of the Internet
www.snopes.com

is a good place to go to separate fact from fiction:

Avoid Excessive Drinking
While recent studies show a glass of wine or one drink a day (two for men) can help protect against heart disease, more than that can cause other health problems such as liver and kidney disease and cancer. Thought for the day: A jug of wine should last a long time.

EVENTS THAT TOOK PLACE IN SEPTEMBER:

August 29th - Sept 1st Our annual mountain ride this year was to Blowing Rock . We went to Grandfather Mountain some of us hiked up the mountain, walked across the Swinging Bridge (not me) and then back down the mountain while others couldn't handle the hike down and had to catch a ride back to the parking lot. We also hiked Linville Falls, went to Linville Caverns, Mystery Hill and rode on the Blue Ridge Pkwy. Our cabins were separated the first night for unforeseen problems but thanks to Jay at Blue Ridge Rentals got us together with side by side cabins for the remainder of our trip. We learned of grub worms w/turtlenecks and Gentle Giants, which boots are made for hiking and long walks, which ones are not, luggage that was left behind and how many people can fit in a 4 person hot tub. There was one bike that broke down and just couldn't get back together for our rides and they were missed on the rides and maybe next time things will go better for them. We had beautiful weather for riding all weekend and overall I believe everyone had a good time.

Sept 13th Defenders of Freedom Poker Run sponsored by Guardian Brotherhood - Bob Burke sat at the CBA booth and signed up two new members and a renewal. Other CBA members rode in the poker run. A good turnout for the Guardian Brotherhood and a beautiful day to ride. They raised over $650.00. Only ½ the pig was eaten so they donated the other ½ pig to the Kitchen.

Sept 13th Randolph County Poker Run with proceeds going to Randy Norris' family

Sept 13th Poker Run for The Wesley Shelter in Wilson - cancelled and will be scheduled for another time. Donation of $100.00 will be sent now.

WINNERS AND LOSERS:

Had Lori Gardner of Washington been present at the meeting she would have won the attendance prize of $104.00. This money will now roll over to the October meeting.

Down Rider 50/50 drawing winner was Jim Loper of Goldsboro. He donated his winnings back to the fund.

Nick Ward had his home broken into and some of the items stolen were his Sportbike, full face helmet, leathers, computer, shotgun and more.

If it is illegal to drink and drive, why do bars have parking lots?

How do they get the deer to cross at that yellow road sign?

Is Santa so jolly because he knows where all the bad girls live?
